Sabattus Mountain & Jockey Cap: Two Short Hikes, Big Views

Neither takes more than ninety minutes, and both end with a view worth the climb.

Not every good hike near the loft is a swimming-hole walk. These two — Sabattus Mountain in Lovell and Jockey Cap in Fryeburg — are real, if short, climbs with payoff views over the lakes and mountains, and either one fits easily into a morning.

Sabattus Mountain

From Lovell village, it's about a five-minute drive to the trailhead. The loop is roughly 1.4 to 1.5 miles with about 500 feet of elevation gain — moderate, with some exposed ledge sections near the top that make it feel like a real hike rather than a walk. The summit looks out over Kezar Lake, Keyes Pond, Pleasant Mountain, and the White Mountains beyond. Plan on about an hour to ninety minutes round trip, more if you linger at the top.

Jockey Cap

In Fryeburg, Jockey Cap is a short, moderate climb up what used to be a small local ski hill — quick enough to do before lunch, with views over the town and the mountains beyond that punch well above the effort required. There's also a granite face on one side that draws technical climbers, but the main trail is a straightforward forest path to the top.

Which one to pick

If you're staying near Lovell for the day or want the more dramatic lake view, Sabattus wins. If you're already in Fryeburg — maybe on your way to or from the Fryeburg Fair — Jockey Cap is the easier add-on. Neither requires much gear beyond real shoes and water.
