A Guide to Lovell & Kezar Lake, Maine

Quiet, clear, and about as classic New England as it gets.

Lovell sits a short drive north of Stow, wrapped around Kezar Lake — one of the cleaner, quieter lakes in this part of Maine, and one of our favorite recommendations for guests who want a slower day than a hike or a shopping trip.

Kezar Lake

Kezar Lake is long, clear, and ringed by hills, with public boat access on the street behind the lake marina. It's a genuinely good spot to bring a kayak or paddleboard, or just find a quiet shoreline spot for the afternoon — it doesn't have the crowds of the bigger lakes closer to North Conway.

Lovell village

The village itself is small and unhurried — a general store, a handful of local businesses, and not much else, which is exactly the appeal for a lot of our guests. It's a good stop for supplies on the way to or from Sabattus Mountain or the lake.

Sabattus Mountain

Lovell is also the access point for Sabattus Mountain, a short, moderate hike with views back down over Kezar Lake itself — see our full hiking guide for details. Doing the hike in the morning and the lake in the afternoon makes for a full, easy day.

Getting there

Lovell is one of the closer destinations from the loft — closer than North Conway in the other direction — which makes it a good pick for a lower-key day, or a half-day if you're also planning something else.
