The Fryeburg Fair: Maine's Biggest Autumn Tradition

If your trip lands in early October, this is worth building the whole weekend around.

The Fryeburg Fair is Maine's largest agricultural fair, running since 1851, and it draws upwards of 300,000 people over its run each fall — an enormous number for a town this size, and a real sign of how big a deal this event is regionally. Fryeburg is a short drive from the loft, which makes this one of the easiest major events to fold into a stay.

What it actually is

This isn't a small-town carnival — it's a full agricultural fair with livestock competitions, ox and horse pulling, harness racing, a working blacksmith shop, agricultural exhibits, a midway with rides, and food that leans hard into Maine fair classics. If you've never been to a real New England agricultural fair, this is one of the best examples left.

When it happens

The fair runs for about a week, ending around Columbus Day weekend in early October — which also happens to line up with some of the best fall foliage timing in the region. Check the fair's current dates before booking, since they shift slightly year to year.

Plan around the crowds

Because of how many people it draws, expect real traffic on Route 5 and 302 near Fryeburg during fair week, especially on weekends. Coming from the loft, you're approaching from a quieter direction than most fairgoers, which helps, but still plan extra time.
